2. Admission and Progression Requirement

Entry Requirements

  1. General Qualification
  1. Candidates must have a second degree in Religious Studies or Theology with extensive research from a recognized University or Theological Institution.

b. Candidates with one-year Master’s degree in Humanities will be made to take the first year courses in MPhil Religious Studies programme at the department. They should pass all courses and attain a minimum CWA of 55.00 or better before they could be admitted into the PhD programme.

  1. Programme Requirements

In addition, candidates must pass a selection interview before they are admitted into the programme.

  1. Duration and Progression
  1. Full time Candidates would be required to complete the course in three years.
  2. Part time candidates would be required to complete the course in 4 years

 

Assessment Requirements

The assessment of students will be based on:

  1. Seminar Presentations
  2. Colloquium Presentations
  3. Publishable Article
  4. Continuous Assessment

This will form 40% of the overall assessment and will comprise of take-home assignments, term paper and mid-semester examination.

  1. End of semester examinations

This will form 60% of the overall assessment and will be written under formal examination conditions at the end of the semester.

  1. Thesis (80,000 words)

 

Requirements for Graduation

For the award of the PhD in Religious Studies, the student must have:

 

  1. passed a Comprehensive Examination with a minimum mark of 55 percent
  2. fulfill a minimum residency requirement of two years
  3. obtained a total score not exceeding 20 percent with each component not exceeding 2 percent in the similarity test using KNUST’s Turnitin system
  4. submitted and successfully defended a thesis;
  5. shown evidence of submission of at least two manuscripts from the thesis for publication in a peer-reviewed journal(s).

3. Employment Opportunities

A PhD graduate in Religious Studies can gain employment in the following sectors:

    1. Teaching and Research Institutions such as Colleges of Education, Public and Private Universities and Theological Institutions
    2. Social Services – Management, Community Development and Non-Governmental, Not-for-Profit Organizations, Environmental Agencies, the Media
    3. Government Services – Civil Service and other Public Sector Service
    4. Consultancy Services

Within the Church – Pastors, Administrators and Directors
